Phylogenesia Automatorum

Web version is live!! Apologies if the performance is bad. Also, there is no music on the web version because Gamemaker's html export doesn't support audio sync groups.

Made for the New Years Incremental Game Jam 2024 - please vote for it there!

Overcome the evolutionary pressure of competing plants and nurture a diverse ecosystem using decidedly unnatural selection. This is a short, incremental roguelite using cellular automata. Features:

  • An ever-increasing set of numbers
  • 10 funny digital plants with their own unique characteristics
  • A host of ways to mutate your plants, turning them into unstoppable ravenous juggernauts and much worse!
  • Field upgrades scattered haphazardly to help and hinder your progress
  • Stats for nerds whether you win (or lose)
  • References?

Instructions:

  • Rules are provided in game, but the goal is to obtain all 10 plants and have them contribute points in a single run
  • Use the mouse to click on buttons and mouse-over most things for information
  • Shift + click to override some cost locks (you will be prompted)
  • Hold F1 to view some more detailed information on the simulation rules

Wonderful music by @weaponizedslob

v1.2

  • Enabled window resizing (game may not look pixel perfect, however)
  • Enabled fullscreen mode (alt+enter)

I didn't really understand what was happening but it was very satisfying :)

Hey thank you for checking it out! The simulation can get very complex, I definitely agree - the main thing is to eyeball it and just see if your plants are looking happy and your numbers on the side are going up! Some of my more experienced playtesters can then form strategies based on that information but honestly it's more eye candy than anything else :)

This game is really cool, but I wish there was a way to change resolution or make the window bigger/full screen. It is so tiny I can't tell what's going on when it's playing...

Thank you so much! I think allowing resizing is just a checkbox on the export - I'll get back to you and reply again to this comment when I've figured it out!

Just FYI, I've updated the game based on your suggestion - check out the v1.2 patchnotes at the bottom of the description section!

very fun! I do wish there was a way to keep going after winning so I can win in a way that doesn't count my birds scoring 7 death points total, but I guess I could just not upgrade the oranges properly for that

Thank you! I think you hit on a very important point - I'm making an incremental but I completely failed to think about players who wanted to keep playing past the goal I've set out for them and just go ham on the simulation. I'll add another option that simply disables the victory condition check so you can upgrade to your heart's content!
